Support Nashville's Tenant Movement! Help us raise $15,000 by July 16th

“Our children need good places to live… that’s how they’re going to progress and get better in the future. They need to see a liveable, possible future now!” - George Davis, Park at Hillside Tenants Association

Friends,

Homes for All Nashville is the only tenant-led housing justice group that is securing historic wins for our city’s renters. By building tenant power and turning an individual fight into a group struggle, Homes for All Nashville has empowered tenants to fire abusive property managers, gain lease extensions in rapid evictions, receive bilingual services, and preserve low-income housing.

We have shown that when tenants fight together they win together. This summer, we’re raising $15,000 to continue to stop displacement and preserve affordable housing!

NOW IS THE TIME to stand with our neighbors who are being pushed out of their homes. Join Homes For All Nashville in the fight against displacement and for affordable housing.

Will you give today to stand with tenants against displacement?

This year,

...we achieved the first tenant-negotiated long-term affordable housing agreement in Nashville’s history. After the 290 unit complex at Park at Hillside was purchased in early 2016 for $20 million, the residents at the Park at Hillside knew they had to stand together to stay in their community. Faced with problem on-site staff members, rampant mold and maintenance issues, and looming displacement, tenants came together with the support of HomesForAll Nashville to develop demands and build their power. In April 2018, after 10 negotiation meetings between owners, tenants and district councilman Colby Sledge, tenants stood their ground and won a written agreement from the owners to keep 290 affordable units in the new development.

While this is a huge victory, it’s only one small part of the powerful tenant movement Homes For All Nashville is building. All this critical work has been made possible by your financial support connected to the labor of tenants and our first paid organizing staff. Now we need your help to keep this momentum going!

Our victories so far…. And we’re just getting started!

With almost little funding, tenant leaders with support of HomesForAll Nashville staff and volunteers have managed some amazing victories:

  • Established Nashville's first tenant union
  • Secured 290 units of low income housing in the redevelopment of Park at Hillside apartments
  • Hosted 70 tenants from across the South for 3 days of workshops and strategy building the first ever Southern Regional Tenant Assembly
  • Secured lease extensions for over 200 tenants at two flipped complexes, giving them more time to find new housing
  • Forced apartment owners to replace abusive management staff at 2 apartment complexes
  • Secured bi-lingual services at 2 apartment complexes where none existed before
  • Won major maintenance improvements at 3 apartments
  • Coordinated “Know Your Rights” trainings with over 115 tenants
  • Brought major media attention to tenant issues throughout Nashville
  • Been featured in the press 31 times, highlighting tenant issues, helping draw major public attention to the displacement and abuse of low-income tenants
  • Co-led the PATHE Coalition to expose the impacts of the housing crisis, forcing affordable housing to become a front and center issue in the Nashville's transit referendum debate

What HFAN partners and tenant leaders are saying:

"The work of HomesForAll has been invaluable in helping build a tenant association that is achieving victories for themselves, while providing a blueprint for similar communities across Nashville." - Colby Sledge, Councilman

“Our children need good places to live… that’s how they’re going to progress and get better in the future. They need to see a liveable, possible future now!” - George Davis, Park at Hillside Tenants Association

“Legally, there was very little we could do to negotiate or change the situation. Having HomesForAll come in to assist residents in getting media attention and getting the story out so that the rest of the community was educated about what was going on really had a tremendous impact.” -Catherine Knowles, MNPS HERO program

“When we come together our voices are actually heard. We came together because we were struggling together. If one person didn’t have a house, the other one didn’t either.” -Nasteho Abdi-Dahir, Somali Community of Middle TN

“When we were standing on our own wishing there was something we could do, HomesForAll let us know that we actually could come together and do something and have a voice.” -Fatimah a-Hakam, Park at Hillside Tenant Association
